This report examines recent trends in health care for children born to mothers enrolled in HUSKY A, including prenatal care, low birthweight, preterm births, pregnancy risk factors, complications of labor and delivery, and obstetric procedures. HUSKY A covers an increasing percentage of all births to Connecticut mothers, especially in Connecticut’s most economically challenged cities and towns. Medicaid coverage alone cannot offset significant socioeconomic differences and health differences that contribute to greater risk; however, some conditions of pregnancy (risk of unintended pregnancy, smoking, anema) can be addressed with risk-appropriate family planning, preconception care, and prenatal care.

We envision a Connecticut that creates opportunity for everyone, not just the lucky and privileged few. Together, we can ensure a prosperous future for all of our children.
