On December 19, 2012, the legislature passed and the Governor signed a deficit mitigation package making $252.3 million worth of cuts to government spending for State Fiscal Year 2013. Early care and education programs and initiatives were entirely spared from cuts. This choice reflects the legislature’s and the Governor’s commitment to young children, and their understanding that providing young children with access to high quality early care and education services are a critical part of closing the achievement gap and supporting our economy, now and in the future.
